#Governor Makinde Mandates Aso-Oke Attire for Oyo Workers on Thursdays

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has directed all civil and public servants in the state to wear traditional attires incorporating Aso-Oke fabric every Thursday, in addition to the existing native dress code on Fridays.

The directive was issued in a circular from the Office of the Head of Service to ministries and agencies on January 27, 2025.

Promoting Culture and Economic Growth

According to the circular, the policy aims to reinforce cultural identity, boost local economies, and empower artisans.

“Every Thursday and Friday, our workforce will become ambassadors of tradition and catalysts for economic transformation,” the directive stated.

The initiative is expected to benefit local weavers, dyers, and tailors by increasing demand for traditional fabrics, thereby sustaining livelihoods, reducing unemployment, and enhancing income streams for artisans.

Governor Makinde emphasized that the policy would contribute to economic growth, drive tourism, and foster inclusive development across Oyo State.

The Economic Potential of Aso-Oke

Aso-Oke, meaning “top cloth” in Yoruba, has long been a symbol of prestige, traditionally worn for special occasions like weddings and chieftaincy ceremonies. In recent years, it has gained global recognition, with high-end fashion designers incorporating it into luxury clothing lines.

The Aso-Oke industry currently supports over 50,000 artisans across key weaving hubs such as Iseyin, Oyo, and Ilorin. The intricate handwoven process can take up to three weeks per design, contributing significantly to the local economy.

In 2023 alone, Aso-Oke exports increased by 15%, generating approximately $120 million in foreign exchange revenue. With the global sustainable fashion market projected to reach $12 billion by 2028, Aso-Oke has the potential to become one of Nigeria’s leading exports.
