Nigerians living outside the country can now obtain a Bank Verification Number (BVN) without returning to Nigeria, thanks to a new initiative by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS). However, this convenience comes with a $50 fee (around ₦80,000).
What Is the NRBVN?
Launched on May 13, the Non-Resident Bank Verification Number (NRBVN) platform enables Nigerians in the diaspora to remotely register for a BVN. The CBN says the goal is to improve financial inclusion and provide easier access to Nigerian banking services for citizens abroad.
CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso said the NRBVN aims to eliminate the need for physical presence in Nigeria to enroll for BVN.
How to Apply for a Non-Resident BVN (NRBVN)
Step 1: Visit the NRBVN Portal
Go to the official website: https://nibss-plc.com.ng/nrbvn
Step 2: Register with Your Email
Sign up using a valid email address. A confirmation link will be sent to your inbox.
Step 3: Activate Account
Click the email link to activate your account and create a password.
Step 4: Set Up Two-Factor Authentication
Scan a QR code using a 2FA app like Google Authenticator to secure your account.
Step 5: Choose Your User Type
Once logged in, select your user status from these options:
- Nigerian (no BVN)
- Nigerian (with BVN)
- Nigerian by descent
Step 6: Upload Required Documents
You’ll be prompted to upload specific documents (see list below).
Step 7: Pay the Registration Fee
A $50 non-refundable fee is required. Pay via Visa or Mastercard on the Tazapay payment portal.
Step 8: Verification and Approval
After payment and document upload, the system verifies your information. If successful, your BVN will be issued within 72 hours.
Documents Needed for NRBVN Application
A valid Nigerian international passport is the primary document required. If unavailable, any of the following may be accepted:
- Expired Nigerian passport
- Valid foreign passport or residence permit
- Green card or equivalent proof of residency
- Utility bill from your country of residence
- Work permit or employment verification
- Proof of tax payment abroad
- Foreign bank statements
