I WENT THROUGH HELL UNDER AMOSUN – DANIEL

Former Ogun State governor and current senator representing Ogun East, Gbenga Daniel, has recounted the political rivalry that existed between him and his successor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, describing his experience under what he called an “enfant terrible successor.”

Daniel said the political tension stemmed from Amosun’s urgency to become governor, noting that his ambitions could not be halted. He explained that because he did not actively support Amosun’s governorship bid, Amosun launched a probe against him when he assumed office in May 2011.

However, Daniel revealed that the duo has since reconciled, putting past conflicts behind them and focusing on working for the development of Ogun State and the country.

He made the disclosure during his 70th birthday thanksgiving service held at Abraham’s Tabernacle, Sagamu, which was attended by notable figures including Pastor Enoch Adeboye, former President Olusegun Obasanjo (represented by his wife, Bola Obasanjo), Governor Dapo Abiodun (represented by Deputy Governor Noimot Salako-Oyedele), Osun State Deputy Governor Kola Adewusi, former Governor Amosun, and traditional rulers such as the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, and Alake of Egba land, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo.

Speaking at the event, Daniel said, “Senator Ibikunle Amosun showed me hell, but we thank God, with the prayers of our clergymen, he has repented. We started the race together, but he was too much in a hurry to be governor. He fought for the crown and got it, and nothing could stop him. I thank him sincerely for coming.”

Daniel and Amosun were political allies while Amosun served in the Senate from 2003 to 2007 and Daniel was governor. However, tensions rose during the lead-up to the 2007 governorship election when Amosun left the PDP to contest against Daniel on the All Nigeria People’s Party platform, ultimately losing. Amosun later succeeded Daniel in 2011, defeating Daniel’s preferred candidate, Gboyega Isiaka. Upon assuming office, Amosun initiated a probe into Daniel’s administration, leading to legal charges of N7 billion, from which Daniel was eventually discharged and acquitted.

At the ceremony, Daniel expressed gratitude for the turnout and highlighted the importance of supporting President Bola Tinubu’s leadership for national progress.

Pastor Adeboye described Daniel as “an exceptional politician and original Omoluwabi,” praising his integrity and contributions to governance. Drawing from Psalm 90:12, Adeboye urged attendees to live conscientiously, prioritize holiness, and embrace faith in Jesus Christ.

Governor Dapo Abiodun lauded Daniel’s contributions, noting that as governor, Daniel laid foundations for growth that continue to benefit the state. He also recognized Daniel’s legislative achievements as a senator and prayed for his continued strength and service to humanity.
