A newly married woman has been arrested by the Jigawa State Police Command over the alleged poisoning of her husband, who reportedly died after consuming a meal she prepared.
The incident occurred on January 23, 2026, at about 5:00 pm in Gauza village, Jahun Local Government Area of Jigawa State. According to reports, the deceased ate his lunch at home before suddenly falling critically ill.
Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Shi’isu Adam, disclosed that the man was rushed to a hospital for urgent medical attention but was pronounced dead while receiving treatment.
Following the tragic incident, detectives from the Jahun Division launched an investigation and arrested the wife of the deceased as the prime suspect in the case. During interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to lacing her husband’s food with rat poison, which she said was purchased by her cousin at her request.
The suspect further claimed that she had been forced into the marriage by her parents, a situation she said contributed to her actions. However, the police authorities have ordered a comprehensive investigation into the matter, and the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Dutse.
The Jigawa State Commissioner of Police has directed that the suspect be charged to court upon the completion of investigations. Meanwhile, the police command has urged residents to remain calm, law-abiding, and to seek lawful means of resolving marital and family disputes.
The command also warned against taking the law into one’s hands, stressing that such actions often lead to irreversible consequences. The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue, while the police reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring justice and protecting lives and property across the state.
