#JUST IN: Nigeria’s National Grid Collapses for 12th Time in 2024

The national grid has suffered its 12th collapse this year, plunging parts of Nigeria into darkness once again.

The collapse occurred at approximately 2:09 PM on Wednesday, according to a tweet from the official handle of Nigeria’s National Grid, which stated:
“The major grid setback has occurred, and the restoration is to commence.”

The incident was also confirmed by Jos Electricity Distribution Company (Jos Disco) in a statement to its customers. The utility company reported that the grid collapsed around 1:33 PM, leading to widespread power outages.

Dr. Friday Elijah, Head of Corporate Communications at Jos Disco, assured customers that efforts were underway to restore power as soon as the grid supply stabilizes.
“We hope to restore normal power supply to our esteemed customers as soon as the grid supply is restored back to normalcy,” he said.

This marks the 12th grid failure in 2024, following 11 similar incidents from January to November. The year’s first collapse occurred on February 4, when the grid’s capacity dropped sharply from 2,407 megawatts to a mere 31MW by noon, resulting in a nationwide blackout.

The recurring grid failures highlight ongoing challenges in Nigeria’s power infrastructure, leaving citizens frustrated and businesses disrupted.
