KANO GOVERNOR ABBA YUSUF TO JOIN APC ON MONDAY

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, is set to formally rejoin the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday, January 26, 2026, following his resignation from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

The development was confirmed in a statement issued on Sunday in Kano by the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature.

According to the statement, the decision to return to the APC is aimed at strengthening cooperation with the Federal Government, fast-tracking development initiatives, improving security coordination, and enhancing service delivery across Kano State.

Governor Yusuf was first elected on the APC platform in 2014 after winning the party’s primary election for the Kano Central Senatorial seat. He later stepped down for the party’s then leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

The statement noted that after years of political engagement across various platforms — including his recent stay in the NNPP — prevailing realities of governance, national unity, and development informed his decision to rejoin the ruling party.

The governor was quoted as saying that returning to the APC would deepen collaboration with the Federal Government, accelerate infrastructural development, strengthen security architecture, and improve governance outcomes in the state.

Yusuf also expressed confidence that the move would further consolidate political stability and unity in Kano.

It was further disclosed that the governor will officially register as an APC member in Kano on Monday alongside 22 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and all 44 local government chairmen in the state.

The governor is also expected to formally launch the APC electronic registration (e-registration) exercise during the event.

With Yusuf’s imminent defection, only six of Nigeria’s 36 states will remain outside the control of the ruling APC. These states are Oyo, Osun, Adamawa, Zamfara, Abia, and Anambra.
