#Kano Governor Orders Probe into Killing of Protesters During Demolition

Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has ordered an investigation into the killing of protesters by security agents during a demolition exercise in the Rimin Auzinawa community, Ungogo Local Government Area.

Governor’s Response and Condolences

In a statement on Thursday, the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, confirmed that three people lost their lives, while several others sustained injuries. Governor Yusuf visited the bereaved families, offered condolences, and pledged state government support.

To aid affected families, the governor:

  • Announced that the government would sponsor the families of the deceased.
  • Ordered the immediate settlement of medical bills for the injured.
  • Provided food items to support the affected community.

Background: The Demolition and Protests

The state government had ordered the demolition of properties at Rimin Auzinawa after the Kano Urban Planning and Development Authority (KNUPDA) declared that they were illegally built on Bayero University land.

However, property owners had secured a court order restraining the demolition pending a legal resolution. Despite this, demolition crews, accompanied by security personnel and armed thugs, arrived at 11:30 p.m. on Sunday and opened fire on unarmed protesters.

Among the victims were Saminu Aliyu and Auwal Sani, who were shot dead at the scene, while a third person reportedly died in the hospital. At least six others sustained gunshot and machete wounds.

Governor Condemns Use of Force, Orders Investigation

Governor Yusuf strongly condemned the use of live ammunition on civilians, describing it as unacceptable and intolerable.

To address the situation, he:

  • Established an investigative committee to identify those responsible.
  • Summoned the Bayero University management to discuss the 40-year-old land dispute with the community.
  • Ordered an immediate suspension of further demolition activities.

Development Plans for the Community

As part of his commitment to the affected community, Governor Yusuf announced plans to:

  • Construct a new Juma’at mosque in memory of the deceased protesters.
  • Connect the community to the national power grid.
  • Install solar-powered boreholes for clean water access.
  • Build a healthcare facility and a feeder road to improve infrastructure.

The governor assured residents of his commitment to a peaceful resolution of the land dispute and justice for the victims.
