Kano Lawmakers Back Deputy Senate President Barau for 2027 Governorship

A group of current and former members of the Kano State House of Assembly has endorsed Senator Barau Jibrin, Deputy President of the Senate, for the 2027 governorship election in Kano State.

The delegation, which includes legislators who have served from 1999 to the present and was led by former Speaker Abdulaziz G. Gafasa, paid a recent courtesy visit to Senator Barau, praising his performance and influence in the state.

According to a statement by the Deputy Senate President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, the lawmakers described Barau as the most “marketable” candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State.

Although Barau has not officially declared his intention to run, key APC stakeholders have reportedly rallied behind him due to his decade-long record in the National Assembly and as First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament.

The former Speaker, Abdulaziz G. Gafasa, said:

“We are here to tell you that we are solidly behind you for three reasons. One, you have positively impacted the lives of our people across the three senatorial districts of Kano State. Two, you have been a lifeline to our party, APC. Thirdly, you have positively touched our lives, even though some of us are not from the same senatorial district as you. This has made you the most marketable candidate in APC.”

Also speaking, Garba Yau Gwarmai, a serving member of the Kano State House of Assembly, said the lawmakers plan to mobilise grassroots support for Barau in the 2027 elections.

“This endorsement is based on your track record of outstanding service over the years. You have been making a positive impact on the lives of our people. You have done well in all spheres of our state. This is why we want you to govern Kano, our beloved state.”

In response, Senator Barau thanked the lawmakers for their support and encouraged continued commitment to the ideals of the APC and President Bola Tinubu.

“We have to work hard and make sacrifices to restore the glorious days of our state. It is a joy that you have come together to salvage our state from the ongoing misgovernance. Let us continue to work together to rescue our beloved state,” he said.
