KANO’S SHIFTING ALLIANCES: APC MOVES FOR SHEKARAU AS KWANKWASIYYA FACES STRAIN FROM DEFECTION

Ibrahim Shekarau has emerged as a pivotal figure in the shifting political landscape of Kano State, as the All Progressives Congress (APC) intensifies efforts to persuade the former governor and current Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader in the state to join its ranks ahead of the 2027 elections.

The political recalibration gained momentum following the defection of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the APC — a move widely seen as altering Kano’s balance of power and weakening the Kwankwasiyya movement associated with Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

With Yusuf now in the APC, attention has turned to Shekarau, a seasoned political heavyweight whose influence spans decades. The Kano APC confirmed that consultations are ongoing, revealing that several high-level delegations have met with the former governor in a bid to secure his defection. Party officials expressed optimism that discussions would yield positive results, describing Shekarau as a political institution whose mentorship shaped many prominent figures in the state.

According to the APC, accommodating new entrants will be guided by an agreed sharing formula within the party structure to ensure inclusiveness and stability. The party also dismissed speculations of internal divisions, insisting it remains united as it prepares for ward and state congresses.

The developments have added new layers to Kano’s longstanding political rivalries, particularly between Shekarau and Kwankwaso. The recent death of Shekarau’s elder brother drew condolence visits from political actors across party lines, including former governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. While officially described as a gesture of sympathy, the visit sparked speculation about possible political undertones. Ganduje later voiced support for Shekarau’s potential entry into the APC, framing it as beneficial for unity and development in the state.

Meanwhile, Kwankwaso appeared to make subtle remarks widely interpreted as directed at Shekarau, though the former governor responded cautiously, emphasizing faith and restraint without escalating tensions. Observers view the exchange as reflective of their long-standing rivalry, which has significantly shaped Kano politics over the years.

Governor Yusuf’s defection has also unsettled the Kwankwasiyya structure, prompting some local coordinators and supporters to reassess their political alignment. Analysts suggest that if Shekarau eventually joins the APC, it could significantly narrow the opposition’s space and consolidate the ruling party’s dominance across Kano’s 44 local government areas.

Despite mounting speculation, Shekarau has refrained from declaring his next move, stressing that any political decision would be based on consultation, principle, and the broader interest of Kano residents.

As political actors reposition ahead of the next electoral cycle, Kano’s political chessboard appears to have been reset. Whether Shekarau remains within the PDP or crosses over to the APC could prove decisive in shaping the state’s power dynamics in the years to come.
