#Lagos Assembly Impeaches Speaker Obasa Over Alleged Financial Misconduct

The Lagos State House of Assembly has impeached its Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, during a sitting held on Monday, January 13, 2024. The impeachment followed allegations of financial misappropriation involving billions of naira.

Obasa has been replaced by his deputy, Mrs. Lasbat Meranda, who represents Apapa Constituency 1. Meranda, a former chief whip of the Assembly, now assumes the role of Speaker.

Allegations and Controversy

Reports allege that Obasa oversaw the withdrawal of ₦43.5 billion for backup vehicles for lawmakers and other questionable expenses. This amount forms part of approximately ₦90.5 billion allegedly misappropriated by Obasa and his associates between January 2023 and the third quarter of 2024.

The reported figures do not account for additional expenditures in the final quarter of 2024, further fueling concerns over financial accountability.

Obasa’s Background

Mudashiru Obasa, who represents the Agege 1 Constituency, was re-elected as Speaker on June 6, 2023, after securing a sixth term in office. He won the March 18 election with 17,214 votes, defeating Raheem Alani of the Labour Party, who garnered 3,933 votes.

The impeachment marks a significant political shift in Lagos State as the Assembly moves to address concerns over transparency and accountability.
