The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, has warned that the state’s Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement Unit (Task Force) could be disbanded if allegations of misconduct and human rights abuses continue.

Speaking at a press briefing in Ikeja on Saturday, Jimoh emphasized that unprofessional behavior, including extortion and abuse, will no longer be tolerated. He stressed that officers found guilty of wrongdoing would face consequences without protection from the police command.

The warning follows recent complaints against the task force, including viral videos suggesting the arrest of lawyers over a land dispute, which have drawn public criticism. Jimoh noted that the command has previously disciplined officers in similar cases and is ready to take further action if necessary.

He stated, “If I can charge five police officers to court for the case in Owode Onirin, then who will I not discipline if there is wrongdoing?” Officers accused of misconduct will be investigated, and members of the public are encouraged to provide credible evidence to support accountability.

Jimoh added that reforms are already underway, with newly vetted officers being deployed to the unit. He also mentioned plans to collaborate with civil society organizations and human rights groups to enhance professionalism and awareness of human rights among the task force personnel.

The Lagos State Task Force has denied claims that its operatives demanded ₦250,000 to release a vehicle in Ijesha, calling the allegation false. The agency confirmed the vehicle was not in its custody and reiterated its commitment to enforcing traffic and environmental regulations, urging residents to submit verified complaints through official channels.

The commissioner concluded by affirming that the police command remains receptive to feedback to improve service delivery and ensure accountability across the state.
