LAGOS GOVT TO REDESIGN OBALENDE UNDERBRIDGE FOR SUSTAINABLE USE

The Lagos State Government has unveiled plans to carry out a full-scale redesign of the Obalende Underbridge.

Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced this on Wednesday during a media briefing following an inspection of Obalende and its environs.

Wahab noted that the state had first conducted a site assessment and cleanup in late 2024, and said it is now ready to officially hand over the space to a major corporate organisation under a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.

“We are returning to Obalende to formally transfer the underbridge to one of the country’s largest corporate bodies, which has agreed to manage it as part of its CSR program,” he said.

He explained that while the project received approval in 2024, its implementation was postponed due to detailed consultations to ensure the design met sustainability standards and aligned with the goals of both the government and its corporate partner.

The redesigned facility will maintain its role as a garage but will also feature public conveniences, sleeping bays, and other amenities. The corporate partner will oversee the long-term maintenance of the site.

“Our aim is to convert the space into a functional, habitable environment that meets the needs of a modern economy and a 21st-century Lagos,” Wahab added, noting that the final design would be presented to the media once the handover is complete.

He also disclosed that Lagos Island Local Government has created a separate plan for the redevelopment of the Oja Oba Underbridge, emphasizing that all underbridge spaces across Lagos should be utilised effectively.

“Public spaces like these should have meaningful purposes. For example, the Osborne underbridge has now been transformed into a football facility,” the commissioner concluded.
