#Lagos Lawmaker Dismisses Claims of Tinubu’s Involvement in Obasa’s Reinstatement

A Lagos lawmaker has debunked reports suggesting that President Bola Tinubu ordered the reinstatement of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, calling it “fake news” aimed at distracting newly elected Speaker Mojisola Lasbat Meranda.

The viral report, published by an online platform, claimed that Tinubu pressured lawmakers to reinstate Obasa, who was removed three weeks ago, citing concerns that the political consequences of his removal could outweigh the need to hold him accountable for alleged corruption and abuse of office. The report further alleged that Tinubu’s directive included allowing Obasa a brief return before stepping down on his own terms.

However, sources within the Assembly have dismissed the claim as baseless. “This is nothing but fake news,” said a lawmaker who requested anonymity. “The new Speaker has met with President Tinubu, Governor Sanwo-Olu, the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), and past Assembly members from the 1st to 9th Assembly. There have also been numerous endorsements and courtesy visits confirming her legitimacy.”

Obasa was removed on January 13 by 32 out of 40 lawmakers over allegations of misconduct, misappropriation of funds, breach of public trust, and highhandedness. Since his removal, there have been speculations about his attempts to return to power.

Some lawmakers argue that reinstating Obasa would be difficult for those who supported his removal. “Bringing him back would be like trying to pacify a snake after its head was severed—its venom will be even deadlier,” one source said.

An aide to Speaker Meranda declined to make an official statement but emphasized that she remains focused on her duties and will not be distracted by “cheap talks and mere speculations” regarding Assembly leadership.

Lagos lawmakers have reaffirmed their support for Meranda, Nigeria’s first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, insisting that her election was constitutional and legitimate.
