The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has impounded 173 vehicles, including 125 commercial buses and 48 private cars, for illegal parking and road obstructions in a sweeping enforcement operation across major traffic-prone areas of the city.
Major Traffic Hotspots Targeted
The coordinated crackdown took place in Idumota, Ijaye Street, Martins, Ereko, Nnamdi Azikiwe by Tom Jones, Ebute-Ero, Oyingbo, Ijora, Adeniji Adele, and Iddo, where unauthorized parking and reckless driving contribute to severe gridlocks.
LASTMA’s Enforcement Initiative
Announcing the operation on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, LASTMA emphasized that the move aims to restore traffic discipline and ensure smooth vehicular movement. Led by General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki and supervised by Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Mr. Sola Giwa, the initiative targets violations such as:
✅ Illegal parking and unauthorized garages
✅ Driving against traffic (one-way violations)
✅ Obstructing roadways and pedestrian crossings
✅ Reckless maneuvers that endanger road users
Understanding LASTMA’s Traffic Regulations
Under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018, there are over 20 traffic offenses that could result in vehicle impoundment. These include:
🚫 Driving without a valid driver’s license
🚫 Disobeying traffic control personnel
🚫 Operating a vehicle without a Certificate of Road Worthiness
🚫 Driving a commercial vehicle without a hackney permit
🚫 Failing to yield to pedestrians at zebra crossings
🚫 Smoking, eating, or drinking while driving
Penalties for Offenders
Vehicle owners whose cars are impounded must pay fines corresponding to their violations. Repeat offenders risk higher fines and additional penalties.
This operation is part of LASTMA’s broader commitment to tackling Lagos’ persistent traffic congestion, ensuring safer roads, and maintaining order in the city’s transport system.
