Correcting Misconceptions on Nigeria’s Religious Harmony, Reaffirming Our Sovereignty, and Rejecting the Unjust CPC Designation

Your Excellency, Mr. President, Distinguished Members of the United States Congress,

On behalf of millions of patriotic Nigerians, the National Patriots Movement extends warm greetings and a firm appeal for fairness, restraint, and truth regarding recent statements designating Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) and the suggestion of possible U.S. intervention.

This designation is unfair, unjust, and without factual basis.
Nigeria does not persecute Christians or any religious group. To sustain this label is to misjudge our nation and harm the very relationship our peoples have built over decades.

1. A Misconception Fueled by False Narratives

Nigeria’s internal security challenges have been gravely distorted.
There is no religious war in Nigeria. Our problems arise from terrorism, banditry, and cross-border insurgency, not state-sponsored persecution.

Both Christians and Muslims are victims of extremist violence. Our Constitution guarantees freedom of religion, and no arm of government discriminates against any faith.
We urge the U.S. Government to verify these facts through its own Embassy in Abuja, whose officers can attest that there is no systematic oppression of any religious community.

The so-called “Christian genocide” narrative is politically motivated. It is being promoted by a small group of diaspora activists seeking to discredit the Tinubu administration and manipulate U.S. sympathy for partisan purposes.

2. Nigeria: A Nation of Inter-Faith Harmony

Nigeria is one of the world’s most religiously diverse yet peaceful societies.
In many families, Christians and Muslims live as one.
Our President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is Muslim; his wife, Remi Tinubu, is Christian; some of their children are Muslims, others Christians. That is the face of a typical Nigerian household — coexistence, not conflict.

We are one people under God. No foreign power should attempt to redefine us through the lens of division.

3. The Voice of Nigerians: Facts From the Ground

To give clarity beyond rhetoric, HeadlineNews.News conducted a nationwide opinion poll (October 2025) covering all six geopolitical zones. The findings are conclusive:

8% of Nigerians support U.S. or Trump-led intervention — mainly from the Southeast, reflecting minority separatist sentiment.

90% of Nigerians are suspicious of U.S. intentions and reject any military involvement.

85% believe such intervention would amount to neo-colonialism disguised as humanitarian concern.

68% expressed total disgust at the idea of foreign interference.

88% of Christians and Muslims alike affirm they live peacefully together and face the same security threats.

90% insist there is no religious war in Nigeria — that foreign bandits and imported terrorists are the true culprits.

75% believe President Trump should stay out of Nigeria’s internal affairs, recognizing Nigeria’s independence and resilience.

The message is unambiguous: Nigerians want cooperation, not coercion.

4. Leadership and Reform: President Tinubu’s Resolve

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has taken bold, measurable steps to address insecurity and strengthen unity.
Just last week he appointed new service chiefs and approved a comprehensive modernization of the Armed Forces.
The government is partnering with international defense companies to provide training, technology, and equipment to combat terrorism effectively.

This reflects determination, not negligence.
Nigeria welcomes collaboration — but only on mutually respectful, sovereign terms.

As President Tinubu affirmed:

“There is no religious war in Nigeria. There is insurgency, and it is being defeated. Nigerians of every faith bleed together, live together, and must rise together.”

5. The CPC Designation: Unjust, Unfounded, and Economically Harmful

Your Excellency, the Country of Particular Concern designation imposed on Nigeria is unjustifiable. It has no credible basis in verified data or diplomatic consultation.
Such a label is unfair and damaging — it misrepresents a democratic nation’s internal challenges and undermines international confidence in our economy.

If allowed to stand, it will discourage foreign investment, undermine our reform momentum, and distort Nigeria’s global image just as we are rebuilding confidence through sound policy.

We therefore appeal for its immediate withdrawal after due investigation and engagement with credible sources on the ground.

Nigeria must not be blackmailed into submission by inaccurate reports or political manipulation.
We urge the U.S. to review its decision objectively and act justly, in the spirit of friendship and fairness.

6. International Law and Sovereignty

The United Nations Charter (Article 2, Paragraph 4) obliges all member states to:

“Refrain from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state.”

Only the UN Security Council can authorize collective action, and only upon clear, independent verification of persecution — which does not exist in Nigeria’s case.
Any unilateral threat of military intervention would therefore be illegal under international law and a grave affront to Nigerian sovereignty.

As UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated:

“Peace cannot be imposed; it must be built on inclusion, understanding, and respect for national sovereignty.”

7. The Source of the Misleading Narrative

A handful of politically aggrieved Nigerians residing in the United States have exploited their access to media and congressional committees to spread false claims of genocide.
Their motive is domestic — to discredit the Tinubu administration and gain foreign sympathy for alternative political interests ahead of 2027.

We trust the United States will not allow itself to be used for personal or partisan battles that distort reality and damage a friendly nation.

8. Partnership, Not Patronage

Nigeria values its long-standing partnership with the United States.
Our shared work in peacekeeping, counter-terrorism, education, and trade is evidence of friendship and mutual respect.

We welcome constructive engagement — training, intelligence sharing, technology transfer — within frameworks that respect Nigeria’s independence.
But we reject intimidation or policies that undermine our democratic sovereignty.

As Prince Bolaji Akinyemi, former Foreign Affairs Minister, cautioned:

“Diplomacy abhors a vacuum. When a country fails to speak, others will speak for it — often against it.”
Today, Nigeria speaks clearly and confidently.

9. The African Context

Across Africa, a new wave of self-reliance and unity is sweeping the continent.
As President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa aptly said:

“Africa seeks partnership, not paternalism.”

Nigeria stands firmly on that principle.
We will engage with allies as equals, not subordinates. Any attempt to pressure or punish us unjustly will find no willing audience among African nations that value sovereignty above all else.

10. A Nation Standing Tall

Despite challenges, Nigerians remain hopeful.
Our economic reforms are tough but necessary; 70% of citizens believe the hardship will yield long-term stability once results manifest.
Even in the Southeast, former hotbeds of separatist agitation, national unity is strengthening as the President demonstrates inclusion and sincerity.

This is not a fractured state in need of rescue; it is a resilient nation rebuilding itself from within.

11. Our Final Appeal

Mr. President, Distinguished Members of Congress,
We ask you to withdraw the CPC designation immediately and replace it with renewed engagement.
There is no genocide, no religious persecution, and no justification for such a grave diplomatic label.

Your decision, if uncorrected, risks alienating Africa’s largest democracy and undermining the very ideals of liberty and fairness the United States claims to champion.
It will also weaken investor confidence in Nigeria, slow ongoing economic reforms, and strain decades of goodwill between our two nations.

As Dr. Gloria Adebajo-Fraser, MFR, President of the National Patriots, reminds us:

“True friendship respects boundaries. Nigeria’s sovereignty is sacred, her unity unbreakable, and her people will never yield their destiny to fear or falsehood.”

Nigeria asks for partnership, not pressure — understanding, not interference.
We trust that, upon proper verification, your government will recognize the truth and act honorably by withdrawing the CPC designation.

In doing so, you will reaffirm America’s standing as a fair and principled global leader and preserve the bond of friendship between our nations.

With highest respect and unwavering patriotism,

Princess Gloria Adebajo-Fraser, MFR
