A newly identified terrorist group, known as Mamudawa, has attacked several communities in Shanga Local Government Area of Kebbi State, leaving at least four people dead.
The attacks, which occurred between Sunday evening and Monday, targeted communities in the Gebbe District. Residents said the assailants stormed the area from the Wawa Forest in neighbouring Niger State, setting homes ablaze in Kalkami, Tungar Bori, and Kawara villages.

One source said Kawara village was completely burnt during the assault, adding that the area has recently faced repeated attacks from bandits, cattle rustlers, and kidnappers. While at least four deaths have been confirmed, the actual number of casualties is still unclear.

The Vice Chairman of Shanga LGA, Adamu Hamza Gebbe, confirmed the incident, noting that such attacks were becoming frequent in the area. The District Head of Gebbe, Alhaji Haruna Usman, also confirmed the invasion, revealing that many residents have fled their homes. Some are now taking shelter in Gungu, while others remain in nearby forests for safety.
The Kebbi State Police Command also confirmed the attack, identifying the perpetrators as members of the Mamudawa group. Police spokesperson SP Bashir Usman said the attackers exploited the difficult wetland terrain to carry out the operation, leaving behind destruction and loss of lives.
The incident has further raised concerns about worsening insecurity in the region, as communities continue to face repeated threats with limited protection.
