### NIGERIAN ARMY REACTS AFTER NIGER REPUBLIC TROOPS STORM KATSINA VILLAGE.

Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has clarified the border incident involving local vigilantes and Nigerien soldiers in Mazanya village, Jibia LGA of Katsina State on 29 November 2025.ADS 5

Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, said the statement was necessary to dispel misinformation and reassure the public of ongoing efforts to improve cross-border coordination.

According to DHQ, four gun trucks and a Toyota Jeep carrying Nigerien troops entered Mazanya to fetch water — a routine activity. However, the unusually large convoy alarmed local vigilantes, who mistook the movement for a hostile incursion and opened fire.

Nigerian security officials quickly intervened, held talks with the Nigerien commander, and resolved the misunderstanding. The troops completed their task and returned to their territory without further issues.

Onoja said both sides acknowledged the need for better communication before any future cross-border movements, especially when large troop convoys or senior officers are involved.

He added that the DHQ convened a Joint Border Security Meeting on 1 December 2025 to strengthen liaison channels and prevent similar incidents. The military restated its commitment to peaceful coexistence and close cooperation with Niger in tackling shared threats such as terrorism, smuggling, and illegal migration.

Residents of Mazanya and other border communities were urged to remain calm, as the situation is under control and both countries remain committed to civilian safety.

Tensions between Nigeria and Niger had risen since the military takeover in Niger, but authorities say cross-border relations remain stable.Headline news
