NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT ARRAIGNS EX-AVIATION MINISTER STELLA ODUAH OVER ALLEGED N2.4BN FRAUD

Oduah appeared before a High Court in Abuja on a five-count charge filed by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi. The charges border on advance fee fraud, conspiracy, and fraudulent receipt of public funds.

According to one of the counts, Oduah allegedly obtained ₦2.4 billion from the Federal Ministry of Aviation through a company, Broad Waters Resources, under the guise of executing technical supervision services. The alleged offence dates back to January 2014.

She was also accused of fraudulently receiving ₦1.6 billion and an additional ₦839 million through similar means, in violation of Section 8 of the Advance Fee Fraud Act.

Oduah, arraigned alongside her co-defendant, Gloria Odita, pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Justice Hamza Muazu granted the former minister bail based on self-recognition, but directed her to surrender her international passport and obtain court approval before travelling outside Nigeria.

Her defence team was led by Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), while Wale Balogun (SAN) represented the second defendant.

This marks the second attempt by the Federal Government to prosecute Oduah, after an earlier case filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja was withdrawn.

Oduah previously served as Aviation Minister during President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration from 2011 to 2014 and represented Anambra North in the Senate between 2015 and 2023.
