The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Rivers State have strongly criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in the state, citing its negative impact on workers’ welfare and economic stability.
In a joint statement signed by Alex Agwanwor (NLC Chairperson, Rivers State), Ikechukwu Onyefuru (TUC Chairperson, Rivers State), and Chuku Emecheta (JNC Chairperson) on March 24, 2025, the unions expressed concerns over unpaid salaries and economic hardship faced by local government workers.
Impact of the Emergency Rule
The unions highlighted the following consequences of the emergency rule:
- Salary Delays: Local government workers are yet to receive their wages, worsening their financial struggles.
- Economic Setback: Potential investors interested in the New Rivers Vision have withdrawn, citing political instability.
- Constitutional Concerns: Suspending elected officials and imposing emergency rule, according to the unions, violates democratic principles and undermines workers’ rights.
Labour’s Demands & Warning
The statement called for an immediate reversal of the emergency rule and reinstatement of elected officials to restore stability. The unions urged the President, National Assembly, and Judiciary to intervene before the crisis escalates further.
They also warned that if their demands are ignored, strategic union actions that could disrupt national economic activities may follow.
Meanwhile, workers have been urged to remain calm while awaiting the government’s response.
