Obasa Calls on Judiciary To Address Cybersecurity Risks in AI-powered Justice System

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has urged the state judiciary to work closely with other arms of government in tackling cybersecurity challenges arising from the growing adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in the justice system.

Obasa made the call at the 2025/2026 new legal year summit themed “Cybersecurity in an AI-Driven Justice System: The Bar, The Bench, and Ethical Concerns” held on Tuesday, September 23, at the MUSON Centre, Onikan.

Commending the judiciary’s dedication to timely justice delivery, the Speaker stressed the need for stronger collaboration among state institutions. It is imperative for all arms of government, particularly the judiciary, to synergise in addressing cybersecurity concerns. Our legal framework must keep pace with technological change to safeguard the rights and interests of Lagosians, he said.

Obasa assured participants that the Assembly would continue to provide facilities and legislative support to strengthen justice delivery.
“As we embrace technology, we must also take proactive steps to shield our people from emerging threats,” he added.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented at the summit by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro (SAN), also emphasised the need for balance between technology adoption and ethical governance.
“The integration of AI into our justice system presents both opportunities and challenges. Our ethical standards must evolve alongside technological advancements,” Pedro remarked.

Professor Lanre Fagbohun (SAN), former Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University, encouraged the judiciary not to fear AI but to leverage it.
“We must learn to be the masters of AI, using it to enhance judicial processes rather than allowing it to dictate our actions,” he said.

The summit provided a platform for judges, lawyers, policymakers, and stakeholders to deliberate on the intersection of law, technology, and ethics—aimed at strengthening Lagos State’s justice system as the new legal year begins.
