#Ogun State Allocates 100 Hectares for Nigerian Navy Dockyard, Waives Billions in Fees

The Ogun State Government has finalized the allocation of 100 hectares of land in Ode-Omi, Ogun Waterside Local Government Area, for the establishment of a Naval Base and Dockyard by the Nigerian Navy.

Governor Dapo Abiodun disclosed this during a meeting with Rear Admiral Mike Oamen, the Flag Officer Commanding, Western Naval Command, at the Governor’s Office in Abeokuta. The governor revealed that all fees and charges, amounting to several billions of naira, have been waived, and the Certificate of Occupancy has been forwarded to Naval Headquarters.

“In light of the potential activities in our riverine areas, the former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo, recognized the importance of a naval presence in Ogun State. Following discussions, a committee identified a suitable location in Ogun Waterside, where we allocated 100 hectares for this facility. The formalities are complete, and we eagerly anticipate the groundbreaking ceremony,” Abiodun stated.

The governor emphasized that the access road to the site would be completed by the end of the week, paving the way for the construction of the base. He expressed optimism that the Naval Base would deter criminal activities and bolster the state’s economic development, especially with projects like the Olokola Deep Sea Port and Tongeji Island oil exploration underway.

“Our state has a high potential of becoming an oil-producing region, and recent visits by the Nigerian Upstream Regulatory Commission, NNPCL, and the Ministry of Petroleum declaring us a frontier state confirm this. Having a Naval Base here is critical to ensuring security and fostering economic growth,” the governor added.

Rear Admiral Oamen commended Governor Abiodun for his unwavering support of the Nigerian Navy and other security agencies. He affirmed the Navy’s commitment to securing Ogun’s waterways and creeks, ensuring they remain free of criminal activities.

“The Naval Base is integral to the Chief of Naval Staff’s vision. We are ready to begin work soon and maintain a strong presence in Ogun State to enhance security and protect its economic assets,” Rear Admiral Oamen stated.

With the Ogun State Government’s proactive steps, the Naval Base and Dockyard are set to become strategic assets, bolstering security and unlocking economic opportunities in the region.
