#Oshiomhole Exposes Retired Generals Behind Illegal Mining, Calls for Military Action

Senator Adams Oshiomhole, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Interior, has accused retired military generals of orchestrating illegal mining operations across Nigeria.

Speaking during the 2025 budget presentation by Senator Sampson Ekong, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Solid Minerals Development, Oshiomhole emphasized that Nigeria’s economic diversification efforts would fail unless the illegal mining menace is effectively addressed.

“The ongoing illegal mining across the country is being carried out by retired generals, and we know them. Everybody in Africa knows them,” Oshiomhole alleged, recalling a letter he wrote to former President Muhammadu Buhari highlighting the issue.

He further recounted challenges faced during political primaries in Zamfara State, linked to the influence of illegal miners.

To combat the problem, Oshiomhole called for a decisive response involving a joint task force (JTF) comprising the Army, Police, and Air Force. “We need to deploy the Army and JTFs to act decisively, even against those involved in illegal activities such as oil theft,” he urged.

The senator’s remarks underscore the urgency of tackling illegal mining, which poses a significant threat to Nigeria’s economic stability and resource management.
