Tragedy struck along the border of Borno State and Yobe State after an airstrike hit a busy weekly market, leaving dozens feared dead and several others injured.
The incident occurred on Saturday at Jilli Market, a popular trading hub between Gubio and Geidam Local Government Areas, where traders from surrounding communities had gathered for business.

Reports indicate that no fewer than 56 people—mostly traders—lost their lives in the strike, while at least 14 others sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment at the Specialist Hospital in Geidam.
Sources said the airstrike was carried out during a military operation targeting suspected Boko Haram insurgents believed to have infiltrated the market to collect levies and obtain supplies. However, the strike reportedly missed its intended target, hitting civilians instead.
An eyewitness recounted that the attack happened in the afternoon while trading activities were ongoing.
“People were going about their normal business when the jets struck. There was panic everywhere. I counted over 50 bodies myself, and more are still being recovered,” the source said.

Local officials also confirmed the incident, though casualty figures varied as rescue efforts continued. Some victims were rushed to nearby hospitals, with a number later reported dead due to the severity of their injuries.
Authorities in Yobe State acknowledged the attack but clarified that the affected community falls within Borno State, urging further enquiries from officials in Maiduguri.
As of the time of reporting, there has been no official statement from the Nigerian Air Force regarding the strike.
The incident has once again raised concerns over civilian safety during military operations in conflict-affected areas, as communities continue to bear the brunt of ongoing insurgency in the North-East.
