PANDEF Community Expresses Gratitude to President Tinubu for Enacting South-South Development Commission Bill
On behalf of the diverse ethnic nationalities and peoples of the South-South geopolitical zone, the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) extends profound appreciation to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for the historic enactment of the South-South Development Commission Bill into law, announced on Tuesday, March 25, 2025. We also commend the National Assembly for their expeditious and diligent processing of this pivotal legislation.
Reaffirming Federal Commitment to Regional Development
This landmark action reinforces the Federal Government’s dedication to fostering equitable regional development across Nigeria. Specifically, it addresses the unique social, environmental, and developmental challenges confronting our region. The establishment of the South-South Development Commission signifies a strategic move towards mitigating longstanding issues that have impeded the progress of the South-South zone.
Call for Competent Leadership in the Commission
PANDEF is optimistic that, in constituting this new Commission, President Tinubu will appoint individuals of proven competence, relevant expertise, and unwavering integrity. Such leadership is crucial to ensure the Commission effectively complements the efforts of our Governors in delivering sustainable development to a region that has, for decades, been instrumental in sustaining Nigeria’s national economy.
Addressing Environmental and Infrastructural Challenges
We reiterate the urgency of tackling other pressing issues, notably environmental remediation due to the adverse impacts of oil and gas production, and the acute deficit in basic infrastructure. These challenges pose existential threats to the South-South and should be prioritized in the Commission’s agenda to enhance the quality of life for our people.
Appeal for Restoration of Democratic Governance in Rivers State
In light of widespread appeals and genuine concerns from various quarters of the country regarding the suspension of the Rivers State Governor, His Excellency Sir Siminalayi Fubara, the Deputy Governor, and the State Assembly, PANDEF earnestly appeals to President Tinubu to facilitate the immediate restoration of democratic governance in Rivers State by reinstating the aforementioned officials.
