Opposition leaders weigh exit from ADC amid deepening crisis ahead of 2027 elections
There are growing signs that key opposition figures in Nigeria may reconsider using the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as their political platform for the 2027 general elections, following escalating leadership disputes within the party.

Prominent politicians such as Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rabiu Kwankwaso are reportedly engaged in high-level discussions regarding the party’s future and possible alternatives.
The uncertainty intensified after the Independent National Electoral Commission suspended recognition of all factions claiming leadership within the party. The decision was based on a ruling by the Court of Appeal, alongside ongoing legal disputes over the party’s internal structure.

Political insiders warn that the unresolved leadership crisis could weaken the party’s ability to effectively participate in the 2027 elections. There are concerns that the situation may disrupt the nomination of candidates across presidential, governorship, and legislative races.
Sources close to the matter indicate that the legal battles could extend beyond the timeline for party primaries and submission of official party documents. This raises the risk that candidates contesting under the platform could face complications if the party eventually loses official recognition.
Additionally, with no recognised leadership in place, any conventions or congresses organised by rival factions may later be declared invalid, further deepening uncertainty within the party.

The situation has reportedly triggered urgent consultations among opposition leaders. Meetings are expected to take place in Abuja after the Easter period, where stakeholders will review their options and develop strategies ahead of the next general elections.

As part of contingency planning, alternative political platforms are already being considered. One of the options is the Action People’s Party, which is seen as relatively stable in its structure. Another option is the New Democratic Congress, a newer party linked to Seriake Dickson, and reportedly free from internal disputes.

Despite these considerations, sources say opposition figures are proceeding cautiously and may keep their final decisions confidential to avoid drawing attention from the All Progressives Congress until plans are fully developed.
These ongoing consultations reflect wider political realignments taking shape among opposition leaders as preparations for the 2027 elections continue.
