The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has identified the man who breached security protocol during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s visit to Kaduna on Thursday as Umar Mohammed, a young man reportedly born with a psychiatric disorder.
President Tinubu was in Kaduna to commission several projects initiated by Governor Uba Sani’s administration and was delivering a speech at Murtala Square when the incident occurred. Mohammed attempted to approach the president but was swiftly restrained by security personnel. However, President Tinubu intervened, instructing his detail to “leave him alone.”
In an official statement, Mansir Hassan, the Police Public Relations Officer in Kaduna State, provided clarification on the event. He confirmed that Mohammed, a resident of Anguwan Muazu in Kaduna, acted out of excitement, driven by a long-held desire to meet both the President and the Governor.
“Umar Mohammed was born with psychiatric conditions and is considered of unsound mind,” the statement read. “He is a passionate supporter of the President and Governor, and he was screened and admitted into the venue wearing APC attire and carrying banners in support of the leaders.”
According to the police, Mohammed had been standing in the designated area for party supporters before he suddenly crossed the security barrier and ran towards the restricted area out of curiosity and excitement. He was promptly apprehended by the inner security team.
During interrogation, Mohammed explained that he was overwhelmed by emotion and merely wanted a closer look at the President. No weapons or suspicious items were found on him.
Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, Rabiu Muhammad, also addressed concerns over a viral video that surfaced after the incident, alleging that it had been **doctored to misrepresent the nature of the event** for political purposes. He warned against the politicization of security incidents and issued a stern caution to those spreading misinformation.
“The matter remains under investigation. Individuals spreading falsehoods for political gain will be invited for questioning and, if found culpable, will face prosecution,” Muhammad said.
The police have assured the public of their commitment to transparency while emphasizing the need to avoid sensationalizing isolated security incidents for political manipulation.
