The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced February 1, 2025, as the commencement date for enforcing the mandatory third-party insurance policy for vehicle owners across the country.
Inspector-General’s Announcement
Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun made this declaration on Friday, January 10, 2025, during a courtesy visit by the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) leadership team, led by Commissioner for Insurance, Mr. Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
The NAICOM delegation included senior officials such as Dr. Usman Jankara (Deputy Commissioner, Technical), Mr. Ekerete Ola Gam-Ikon (Deputy Commissioner, Finance and Administration), Dr. Talmiz Usman (Director, Legal, Enforcement, and Market Development), and others.
Legal Framework for Enforcement
The IGP underscored the significance of third-party vehicle insurance, citing Section 68 of the Insurance Act and Section 312 of the 1945 Motor Vehicle (Third Party Insurance) Act, which mandate all vehicle owners to obtain third-party insurance coverage before using public roads.
Violators of these provisions risk penalties, including fines, imprisonment, or both.
IGP’s Commitment
“The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to collaborating with all ministries, departments, agencies, and organizations to prioritize the protection of lives and property across the nation,” the IGP stated.
NAICOM’s Call for Collaboration
Commending the IGP’s leadership and achievements—particularly the establishment of the Police Insurance Bank Limited—Mr. Omosehin emphasized the importance of police support in driving compliance with insurance laws.
He highlighted the substantial benefits of compulsory third-party insurance, which provides essential protection for all road users. He also urged the police to ensure seamless nationwide enforcement of the policy.
The enforcement aims to strengthen adherence to insurance regulations, enhance road safety, and safeguard the interests of all stakeholders on Nigeria’s roads.
