#Senator Lalong Demands Immediate Electrification of Plateau South and Central Zones

Senator Simon Bako Lalong, representing Plateau South Senatorial District, has expressed deep dissatisfaction over the prolonged neglect of Plateau South and Central Senatorial Districts in Nigeria’s electrification plans. He described the lack of power supply as a significant hindrance to economic growth, affecting approximately 70% of the state’s population.

In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media, Dr. Makut Simon Macham, on January 13, 2025, Senator Lalong raised these concerns during the Senate budget defense session with the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu.

Longstanding Efforts and Broken Promises

Senator Lalong highlighted his efforts during his tenure as Governor of Plateau State to connect these zones to the national grid. These efforts included compensating landowners, relocating properties on the power corridor, and providing other critical support to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and the Ministry of Power.

Despite repeated assurances from the TCN, he lamented that these commitments remain unfulfilled, leaving the people of Plateau South and Central without electricity and limiting their economic opportunities in agriculture and other productive sectors.

Call to Action

The senator urged Minister Adelabu to prioritize resolving this issue, emphasizing that electrification would unlock economic potential in the affected regions. He also assured that the Senate would allocate the necessary funds and perform rigorous oversight to ensure the project’s completion, aligning with the goals of the Renewed Hope government.

Advocacy for the Judiciary and Other Key Sectors

As Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters, Senator Lalong also participated in the judiciary’s budget defense. He stressed the importance of adequately funding the judiciary to maintain its independence and ensure the effective delivery of justice.

Additionally, Senator Lalong attended the budget defense sessions for the Senate Committees on Navy and Finance, reaffirming his commitment to advancing development across multiple sectors.

Conclusion

Senator Lalong’s advocacy underscores the urgent need to address the power challenges in Plateau South and Central zones, which have hindered economic progress for years. His push for accountability and proper funding highlights his dedication to improving the lives of his constituents and strengthening governance in critical sectors.
