Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has strongly criticized the House of Representatives Constitution Review Committee’s proposal to create 31 additional states in Nigeria.
Sani described the idea as both ironic and comical, arguing that many of Nigeria’s existing 36 states are already struggling financially and depend heavily on federal allocations for survival.

The proposed states include:
- Kogi State: Okun, Okura, and Confluence
- Benue State: Benue Ala and Apa

Sani: Politicians Seeking “Mini Colonies”
Reacting via his X page on Friday, Sani accused politicians of prioritizing their personal interests over Nigeria’s economic realities.
“While many states are dependent on federal allocation for their survival, the House of Representatives’ proposal for 31 states is ironic and comical. Politicians just want to carve out mini colonies for themselves,” he wrote.
The proposal has sparked nationwide debate, with critics arguing that Nigeria needs economic stability and restructuring, not an increase in administrative divisions.
