Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, led other top government officials to pay tribute to Nigeria’s fallen heroes during the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day in Abuja. Among the dignitaries present were Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, Chief Justice of Nigeria Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, and Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun.

The ceremony included the traditional laying of wreaths to honor the sacrifices of the Nigerian Armed Forces in maintaining the country’s peace and security.

Tinubu’s Absence

President Tinubu was unable to attend as he was participating in the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW 2025) in the United Arab Emirates. The summit, hosted by Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, aims to foster global dialogue on sustainable development and socio-economic progress.

A Tribute to Military Heroes

The event, also attended by service chiefs, members of the diplomatic corps, and Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, highlighted the sacrifices made by the armed forces in preserving Nigeria’s unity and security.

In a statement, the Senate commended the bravery of military personnel, noting their efforts in safeguarding the nation from internal and external aggression.

Significance of Armed Forces Remembrance Day

Celebrated annually on January 15, Armed Forces Remembrance Day honors fallen soldiers and recognizes the contributions of veterans from World War I, World War II, the Nigerian Civil War, and ongoing peacekeeping efforts.

Originally observed on November 11, aligning with Commonwealth nations’ commemoration of the end of World War I, Nigeria changed the date to January 15 to mark the end of the Nigerian Civil War in 1970.

A Reflection on Sacrifice and Unity

As Nigeria marks 64 years of independence, this year’s commemoration serves as a solemn reminder of the courage and dedication of its military personnel in ensuring the nation’s survival amid various challenges. The event underscored the importance of unity and resilience in overcoming adversity, both past and present.
