STUDENT LEADERS REJECT ATTEMPT TO MANIPULATE RESULT OF ELECTION INTO LAGOS JCC AXIS

Six of the ten student leaders who participated in the election for the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Joint Campus Council (JCC), Lagos Axis, on Saturday have rejected attempts to manipulate the results of the vote.

In a statement released on Sunday, the group, operating under the Concerned Senators of NANS JCC, Lagos Axis, alleged that the Convention Chairman, who acted as the umpire, tried to overturn the outcome determined by the voting senators.

The student leaders involved are Adikaibe Emmanuel Chimezim (St Augustine College of Education), Omogunle Monday Igbekele (Yaba College of Technology), David Gabriel O (Lagos State University of Science and Technology), Oladokun Sodiq Olaide (Lagos State College of Nursing), Adebayo Korede Peter (Lagos State University), and Bolaji Olatubosun Akinpelu (University of Lagos).

The election included ten student leaders from ten tertiary institutions in Lagos State tasked with electing a new chairman.

According to the statement, “On Saturday, March 28, 2026, a duly convened convention was held at the Federal College of Education, Akoka, to elect the new leadership of NANS JCC, Lagos Axis, which coordinates all NANS activities in the state. The chairmanship election took place in the presence of security agencies, including the Director of State Service and the Nigeria Police, to ensure transparency and fairness.”

The two candidates were Comrade Odewunmi Quadri, who received six votes, and Comrade Rilwan Ajayi, who received four votes. However, the Convention Chairman reportedly declared the result a 5-5 tie and attempted to use his veto power to select a winner, a move the student leaders say contradicts the NANS constitution and the will of the majority.

They added, “There was no tie in the votes, and no constitutional provision grants the convention chairman authority to override votes cast by senators. Any attempt to manipulate the result would be null and void, as the will of the majority must prevail.”
