French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Monday a major enhancement of France’s nuclear capabilities, including an increase in nuclear warheads, aimed at boosting national and European security amid rising global tensions.

Speaking from Long Island in western France, home to the country’s nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines, Macron confirmed the expansion while choosing not to disclose the exact number of warheads, signaling a departure from France’s previous transparency regarding its nuclear arsenal.

As part of the modernization plan, France will introduce a next-generation nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine, expected to become operational by 2036. The new vessel will replace older submarines and strengthen France’s long-term strategic strike capabilities.

Macron also revealed plans to add a “European dimension” to France’s nuclear deterrence strategy, with countries such as the United Kingdom and Germany expressing interest in joint projects on very long-range missile systems, aiming to enhance Europe’s collective defense posture.

The French president emphasized that nuclear deterrence remains central to national defense, and these moves reflect a broader effort to respond to evolving geopolitical threats while reinforcing sovereignty and security across Europe.
