Covenant University Retains Top Spot in Nigeria in 2025 Times Higher Education World University Rankings

Covenant University, a private Christian institution in Ota, Ogun State, has once again emerged as the top-ranked Nigerian university in the 2025 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings. Ranked globally within the 800-1000 band, the university achieved an overall score of 34.5-38.1, with strong performances in teaching (23.1), research environment (25.0), and research quality (51.0).

Following Covenant University in the rankings is Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), ranked globally within the 1001-1200 band. ABU demonstrated a strong international outlook (40.9) and competitive research quality (55.7).

Landmark University, another private institution in Kwara State, also placed within the 1001-1200 band, securing the third position in Nigeria.

The University of Ibadan (UI), ranked within the 1001-1200 band, slipped to fourth place in Nigeria. UI, with its student-to-staff ratio of 19.7, continues to prioritize interdisciplinary research.

The University of Lagos (UNILAG), ranked within the 1001-1200 band, maintained its position among the top five Nigerian universities, with a strong emphasis on research quality (64.5).

Bayero University, Kano, slipped one position to sixth place, ranked within the 1201-1500 band.

The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), and the Federal University of Technology, Minna, both ranked within the 1201-1500 band, secured seventh and eighth positions respectively.

The University of Benin, ranked within the 1201-1500 band, retained its ninth position in the rankings.

The University of Ilorin, ranked within the 1201-1500 band, slipped four positions to tenth place in Nigeria.

Globally, Oxford University topped the 2025 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University.
