President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has named Aisha Garba, a senior education specialist at the World Bank, as the new Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).

The announcement, made on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, was confirmed in a statement by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga.

A Career Dedicated to Education and Development

Garba, an international development expert with over 20 years of experience, has a proven track record in designing and implementing impactful education programs aimed at fostering human and economic development.

The statement highlighted her expertise in navigating complex environments, including fragile, conflict, and violence-prone settings, to deliver sustainable educational solutions. Her extensive network spans governments, development partners, and communities, making her uniquely qualified for the role.

Educational and Professional Background

  • Education: Alumna of Petra American University in Jordan, where she earned a combined Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Computer Studies in 2000.
  • Previous Roles: Contributed to achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in Nigeria and served as a consultant for organizations such as the World Bank, Department for International Development (DFID), BOND-UK, Regent Foundation, and Muslim Aid Organization.

Presidential Confidence in Her Leadership

President Tinubu expressed optimism about Garba’s ability to advance the administration’s vision of providing quality education and equipping Nigerian children for global competitiveness.

“With her extensive experience and a proven track record in education and human development, the President expects Aisha Garba to lead UBEC in delivering sustainable solutions that will enhance access to quality education for Nigerian children,” the statement read.

Transition and Vision for UBEC

Garba succeeds Dr. Hamid Bobboyi, who recently highlighted significant advancements in federal education initiatives, including the increase in matching grants for state infrastructure projects under UBEC.

Earlier this year, UBEC announced a hike in federal matching grants for state educational infrastructure to N3.5 billion, requiring states to provide counterpart funding for development projects.

Garba’s appointment signals a renewed focus on leveraging expertise and resources to improve Nigeria’s basic education system.
