President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the renaming of the University of Abuja in honor of former military Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, following the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting chaired by President Tinubu on Wednesday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Idris explained that the institution will now be known as Yakubu Gowon University, subject to legislative approval by the National Assembly.
“The Federal Executive Council has decided to rename the University of Abuja to honor elder statesman, General Yakubu Gowon,” Idris said. “The process will proceed to the National Assembly for legislative action to finalize the change.”
In addition, the minister announced that the FEC will proceed on recess from December 18, 2024, to January 6, 2025.
