President Bola Tinubu has returned to Nigeria following his state visit to the Republic of Türkiye, arriving at approximately 8:55 p.m. on Sunday. He was welcomed by senior government officials.
Tinubu departed Abuja for Türkiye on January 26, 2026, as part of efforts to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties between the two nations. The visit follows Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s official trip to Nigeria in October 2021, which had reinforced bilateral relations.

During the multi-day visit, Tinubu and Erdoğan signed nine Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs), including agreements aimed at boosting bilateral trade from $2 billion to $5 billion. President Tinubu noted that the establishment of a joint Economy and Trade Committee would further support investments and economic cooperation between the countries.
Other agreements covered areas such as energy, media, higher education, and Halal Quality Infrastructure, aimed at enhancing the competitiveness of Nigerian agricultural products in international markets.

President Erdoğan also expressed Türkiye’s support for Nigeria in its fight against terrorism, pledging to deepen cooperation in military training and intelligence. Speaking at a joint press briefing, Erdoğan commended Nigeria’s anti-terrorism efforts and said Türkiye is ready to share its expertise in counterterrorism. He highlighted the threat posed by terrorist groups in Africa’s Sahel region to the continent’s stability.

Additionally, Nigerian officials engaged with leading Turkish defense firms, with optimism that the discussions would yield positive outcomes. Trade between the two countries includes Nigeria exporting crude oil and agricultural products to Türkiye, while Türkiye exports planes, iron and steel, chemicals, and helicopters to Nigeria.
