#Tragedy in Akure: Two Siblings Die in House Fire While Mother Went Out for Food

A devastating fire claimed the lives of two young siblings, Jelad Oluwaranakinse, aged five, and his brother Jenson, aged three, in the Oluwatuyi area of Akure, Ondo State, on Wednesday.

Eyewitnesses reported that the children were locked inside their home by their mother, Mrs. Deborah Oluwaranakinse, who had stepped out to buy food for them. Tragically, while she was away, the fire engulfed the apartment, reducing it to ashes and leaving the boys trapped inside.

Failed Rescue Efforts

Neighbours made desperate attempts to extinguish the fire and rescue the children but were ultimately unsuccessful. “We tried our best to put out the fire and save the kids, but it was too late,” one eyewitness recounted.

The state fire service was called but arrived after the fire had already consumed the apartment. The children’s charred remains were later taken to the morgue at the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital in Akure.

Police Confirm Incident

Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Funmilayo Odunlami, confirmed the tragic event and disclosed that investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the fire.

“The two male children left in the room were choked and burnt. One is Jelad Oluwaranakinse, aged five, and the second is Jenson Oluwaranakinse, aged three. Their mother had locked them inside the house and stepped out to get food,” the PPRO stated.

Cause of Fire Still Unknown

Witnesses reported that the fire erupted suddenly, but the exact cause has yet to be determined. The police and relevant authorities are working to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident.

This heartbreaking event has left the Oluwatuyi community in mourning, with many questioning the safety measures needed to prevent such tragedies in the future.
