#Tragedy Strikes as Prospective NYSC Member Dies in Road Accident, Others Injured

A tragic accident on Wednesday claimed the life of a prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member and left 11 others injured along the Amasiri-Okigwe road in Ebonyi State.

The incident occurred when a 14-seater bus belonging to Enugu North Mass Transit rammed into a parked truck at Amenu village in Okposi. The victims, mostly prospective corps members, were traveling to the NYSC orientation camp in Afikpo Local Government Area for their three-week program as part of the 2024 Batch C Stream II.

Victims and Rescue Efforts

Eyewitnesses reported that a female corps member, whose identity remains unknown, succumbed to her injuries, while her colleagues and other passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries. Witnesses and security officials promptly rescued the survivors and transported them to David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences (DUFUHS) Hospital in Uburu, where they are currently receiving treatment.

A hospital official confirmed the arrival of the victims, stating, “They were brought in by security officials, and they are responding to treatment.”

FRSC Preliminary Report

The Ebonyi State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Igwe Henry, confirmed the accident. He stated that the crash involved a Toyota commercial bus and a Mercedes-Benz tipper truck.

According to Mr. Henry, initial findings suggest the crash was caused by excessive speed on the part of the bus driver. “The victims had already been rescued before our men arrived at the scene, so we couldn’t confirm the number of casualties. However, the items recovered at the scene are in the custody of a local chief,” he added.

He noted that those injured appeared to be in stable condition when FRSC officials visited the hospital.

NYSC Reacts

The Ebonyi State NYSC Coordinator, Foluke Oladeinde, confirmed the accident but was visibly shaken and unable to provide additional details. “I am not in the right frame of mind to talk now. I am in the hospital with the victims,” she said.

Community Impact

The accident has left the community in mourning, with many expressing sorrow over the loss of life and urging drivers to exercise caution to prevent similar tragedies. The NYSC and relevant authorities are expected to further investigate the incident and ensure proper support for the affected individuals.
