#Trump Urges Global Businesses to Manufacture in the U.S. or Face Tariffs

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a clear ultimatum to global business leaders: produce goods in the United States or face steep tariffs.

Speaking remotely from the White House to attendees of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Trump reinforced his long-standing “America First” economic policy. “Come make your product in America, and we will give you among the lowest taxes of any nation on earth. But if you don’t, very simply, you will have to pay a tariff,” Trump stated.

Economic Policies and Tariff Threats

Since his second term inauguration, Trump has moved swiftly to implement a wave of executive orders, including withdrawing the U.S. from the Paris Climate Accord and the World Health Organization. He also hinted at imposing tariffs on key trading partners, including Canada, Mexico, and China, by February 1.

Oil Prices and the Russia-Ukraine War

Trump linked the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war to global oil prices, suggesting that lower prices could bring the conflict to an immediate halt. “I’m going to ask Saudi Arabia and OPEC to bring down the cost of oil. If the price came down, the Russia-Ukraine war would end immediately,” he said, adding that high oil prices are sustaining the conflict.

Global Cooperation and Trade Policies

The World Economic Forum, attended by over 50 heads of state and 3,000 public and private sector leaders, coincided with Trump’s inauguration and raised concerns about the implications of his policies. Key issues include his threats to impose tariffs on international trade partners, demands for NATO members to increase contributions, and the withdrawal from international treaties such as the Paris Agreement.

On Wednesday, Trump escalated his rhetoric against Russia, urging President Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine or face severe economic consequences. “Stop this ridiculous war, or I will put high levels of Taxes, Tariffs, and Sanctions on anything being sold by Russia to the United States,” Trump warned via Truth Social.

While emphasizing his affinity for the Russian people, Trump criticized the Kremlin’s actions and claimed the conflict would never have started under his leadership. “Let’s get this war, which never would have started if I were President, over with,” he added.

The World Economic Forum organizers noted that Trump’s policies have the potential to reshape international norms and institutions, sparking debate about the future of global cooperation amidst shifting geopolitical landscapes.
