DISU RESUMES AS ACTING IGP, COMMITS TO PUBLIC TRUST AND OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE.

Tunji Disu has officially assumed office as the acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), taking over leadership of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) on Wednesday in a ceremony held at Louis Edet House, Abuja. His appointment by President Bola Tinubu came a day earlier, following the resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun, who stepped down for family reasons.

At the handover event, Disu, 59, pledged to lead a modern, professional, and accountable police force. He emphasized integrity, courage, and compassion as essential qualities for officers while promising to advocate for their welfare and the resources needed for effective service.

“My tenure will be built on three clear commitments: professionalism, modernism, and accountability. Leadership in this service from this day forward must be visible, accountable, and worthy of being followed,” he stated.

Egbetokun, in his remarks, urged Disu to consolidate the gains achieved during his tenure, including strengthened inter-agency collaboration, improved intelligence integration, enhanced officer welfare, and disruptions of criminal networks. He highlighted that sustainable progress depends on community-centered policing, integrity, and transparency.

President Tinubu expressed confidence in Disu’s abilities, citing his performance while leading the Lagos Rapid Response Squad and other policing roles. He urged the new IGP to lead firmly but fairly, prioritize public safety, and innovate to tackle Nigeria’s security challenges, including terrorism and banditry.

Prior to this appointment, Disu served as Assistant Inspector-General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Lagos and held leadership roles across Rivers, FCT, and Lagos States. He has a long career in the police force, including heading the Intelligence Response Team and serving in several divisional postings across the country.

Born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos Island, Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force in 1992 and has steadily risen through the ranks, bringing decades of experience to his new role as the nation’s top police officer.
