U.S COMMENDS NIGERIA OVER 386 TERRORISM CONVICTIONS

The United States has praised Nigeria for securing 386 convictions in terrorism-related cases, describing the development as a major milestone in the country’s fight against extremism and a strong demonstration of judicial accountability.

The commendation was issued by the U.S. Senior Advisor for Arab and African Affairs, Massad Boulos, who applauded Nigeria’s efforts to speed up the prosecution of terrorism suspects after years of delays in court proceedings.

According to the statement, the U.S. welcomed the convictions of Islamist militants and described the outcome as an important step toward justice, rule of law, and public trust in legal institutions. It also emphasized that transparent and timely judicial processes are essential in addressing extremism and ensuring long-term national stability.

The announcement follows Nigeria’s disclosure that a total of 508 terrorism-related cases were handled during recent trials, resulting in 386 convictions, eight discharges, two acquittals, and 112 adjournments for future hearings.

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice confirmed that the trials were conducted across multiple judges at the Federal High Court in Abuja and formed part of an ongoing series of coordinated terrorism prosecutions.

He further noted that additional trial phases have already been scheduled as the government continues efforts to conclude pending cases involving suspected terrorists under the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act.

The development comes amid continued international attention on Nigeria’s security situation and its response to insurgency and extremist violence.
