#U.S. Embassy in Nigeria Closes to Honor Former President Jimmy Carter

The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Thursday, January 9, 2025, to honor the passing of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the U.S. Mission in Nigeria commemorated President Carter’s enduring legacy, highlighting his contributions to peace, democracy, and human rights.

“Jimmy Carter, the first U.S. President to visit Nigeria, played a pivotal role in strengthening U.S.-Nigeria relations and supporting Nigeria’s democratic process. His legacy continues to inspire us,” the statement read.

President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden also paid tribute to Carter in a heartfelt statement dated December 29, 2024, describing him as an extraordinary leader, humanitarian, and advocate for civil rights.

“Jimmy Carter’s compassion and moral clarity worked to eradicate disease, forge peace, promote free and fair elections, and advocate for the marginalized. He was a man of great character and courage, who inspired millions around the world,” President Biden said.

Biden announced an official state funeral for Carter, honoring him as the 39th President of the United States, former Governor of Georgia, a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, and a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy.

Carter’s lasting impact on global peace and democracy, along with his deep commitment to humanity, remains a guiding light for millions. The closure of U.S. diplomatic offices in Nigeria reflects a solemn moment to remember and celebrate his remarkable life and legacy.
