ULTIMATUMS, DIPLOMACY AND A TRIP TO GRACELAND AS TRUMP EYES A DEAL WITH IRAN

President Donald Trump has combined diplomatic maneuvers with personal activities over the past few days, amid ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran.

On Friday, Trump suggested the US war with Iran was “winding down,” but by Saturday he issued a 48-hour ultimatum for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face American airstrikes. Despite this, he spent Sunday golfing and visiting his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.

By Monday, as global markets reacted to the uncertainty, Trump indicated that Iran was engaging in “constructive” discussions with the US. He then traveled to Memphis, Tennessee, delivering a speech, visiting Graceland, and meeting with National Guard personnel.

Meanwhile, US and Israeli strikes on Iranian targets continued, and Iran maintained missile and drone attacks on US forces and allies. Traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remained restricted.

Trump emphasized that the US and Iran had “major points of agreement” and expressed hope for a deal, while warning that Iran had one final opportunity to end its threats. Iranian officials, however, denied any substantive talks had taken place, although the prospect of negotiations briefly boosted global markets and eased oil prices.

The president’s itinerary, which included observing Elvis Presley’s historic home and commenting on Memphis crime reductions, highlighted a mix of diplomatic signaling and domestic leisure activities, even as tensions in the Middle East persisted.
