The United States House Committees on Appropriations and Foreign Affairs have released a report detailing findings and recommendations on the reported persecution of Christians in Nigeria. The development was confirmed by US Congressman Riley Moore on his X account.

The investigation, mandated by former President Donald Trump, tasked Moore and Appropriations Committee Chairman Tom Cole with examining claims of violence against Christian communities and broader security challenges in Nigeria. Moore previously led a delegation on a fact-finding mission to the country, visiting Internally Displaced Persons camps in Benue, engaging with victims of terrorism, and meeting Nigerian government officials led by National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu.

Moore stated that the United States now has a clearer understanding of the threats faced by Christian communities in Nigeria. The report outlines accountability measures, strategies to counter radical Islamic terrorism, and plans for closer coordination with the Nigerian government to enhance security.

The recommendations include establishing a bilateral US–Nigeria security agreement to protect vulnerable Christian populations, withholding certain US funds until demonstrable actions are taken to curb violence, and imposing sanctions or visa restrictions on individuals or groups involved in religious persecution. Other measures include providing technical assistance to combat violence by armed Fulani militias, advocating for the repeal of Sharia and blasphemy laws, and working with international partners including France, Hungary, and the United Kingdom.

Speaking on the report, Moore said, “This document is the culmination of months of investigation, bipartisan fieldwork in Nigeria, consultations with religious leaders, and engagement with senior Nigerian officials. It provides concrete actions to end the persecution of Christians and address growing extremist violence in the region.”

Moore also expressed gratitude to former President Trump for redesignating Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern, highlighting the administration’s commitment to protecting Christians and addressing broader security threats.

The report comes amid heightened international attention following statements by former President Trump warning the Nigerian government to act against Christian persecution or risk potential military intervention. The United States has since conducted joint security operations in Nigeria, including airstrikes and deployment of over 200 troops.
