The United States Embassy in Abuja has issued a security alert warning American citizens in Nigeria of a high potential for protests in the capital today (Wednesday, March 4, 2026) amid escalating tensions in the ongoing US/Israel-Iran conflict.

In a post on X, the embassy advised US citizens in Abuja to remain in their residences throughout the day and avoid the embassy compound until further notice.
It noted that previous similar demonstrations “have resulted in violent clashes between the group and Nigerian security forces,” raising concerns about possible escalation.

The embassy urged Americans to:
– Exercise heightened caution
– Avoid protest areas and crowds
– Be aware of surroundings
– Keep a low profile
– Review personal security plans
– Keep mobile phones charged
– Carry proper identification
– Stay alert in public places (shopping centres, places of worship)
– Vary travel routes and times

Despite the alert, the embassy confirmed that its consular section in Abuja and the consulate general in Lagos remain open.
It encouraged US citizens to monitor the embassy website for updates and enrol in the Smart Traveller Enrolment Programme (STEP) to receive security notifications.

The warning follows a global security alert issued by the US government on Monday, urging increased caution due to the evolving situation in the Middle East, including potential disruptions to air travel.
The alert comes after coordinated US-Israeli strikes on Iranian targets that killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Armed Forces Chief of Staff Abdolrahim Mousavi, and other senior officials, triggering Iranian retaliation across the region.
