The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed a deadly overnight attack by Boko Haram terrorists on a military base in Benisheikh, Borno State, which led to the deaths of some soldiers during the confrontation.
In a statement released on Thursday, the military said troops of Operation Hadin Kai came under a coordinated assault around 12:30 a.m. when insurgents attempted to overrun the Headquarters of the 29 Task Force Brigade.

According to the DHQ, the troops responded swiftly with what it described as “superior firepower,” forcing the attackers to retreat in disarray and abandon their mission. The military added that several terrorists were killed during the exchange, while others fled the scene with injuries.
The statement described the attack as a desperate move by insurgents who have recently suffered heavy losses in ongoing counter-terrorism operations across the North-East.
It further confirmed that some soldiers paid the ultimate price in the line of duty, describing them as “brave and gallant personnel” who showed courage in defending the base. The Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, was said to have commiserated with the families of the fallen troops and honoured their sacrifice to the nation.

However, the DHQ did not address reports circulating online claiming that a Brigade Commander was killed during the attack. Authorities said details of casualties would be released after proper notification of families.
The military also cautioned the public against spreading unverified information about the incident, noting that clearance operations are still ongoing in the area to track down fleeing insurgents and prevent regrouping.
Reaffirming its commitment, the Armed Forces said it remains determined, alongside other security agencies, to sustain operations against terrorism and restore lasting peace in the region.
