The Kogi State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps has attributed a fatal accident on the Lokoja–Abuja highway, which claimed five lives and left seven others injured, to wrongful overtaking.
The command disclosed that the crash occurred on Tuesday and involved 12 persons, including three children—two girls and a boy.

According to the FRSC, the accident involved a Toyota Avensis belonging to Omala Local Government and a Sino truck owned by Dangote Cement Plc.
The report stated that the car, with registration number Kogi BJK172LG, and the truck, with registration number BBR719SA, collided head-on, resulting in the death of five occupants at the scene.
Seven other passengers sustained injuries of varying severity, including bruises and fractures. They were taken to Ekpe Hospital in Ganaja and ASCO Hospital in Ajaokuta for medical treatment.
The bodies of the deceased were deposited at the morgue of the Kogi State Specialist Hospital in Lokoja.

While confirming wrongful overtaking as the cause of the crash, the FRSC advised motorists to avoid speeding and dangerous overtaking on highways to prevent similar incidents.
The corps also disclosed that four hand-held mobile phones recovered from the scene are currently in its custody, while the vehicles involved and other personal belongings were handed over to officers of the Ajaokuta Police Division.
Kogi State has recorded several fatal road crashes in recent times. In December, a similar accident along the Ejule–Enugu highway reportedly claimed 12 lives and left two others injured.
