10 Killed in Reprisal Attack on Fulani Community in Kebbi

At least ten people have been reported dead after a reprisal attack on a Fulani settlement in Tilli community, Bunza Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

The attack took place early Sunday, following the killing of a vigilante member by suspected Lakurawa terrorists. Local residents allegedly blamed Fulani herders for the vigilante’s death and launched a retaliatory assault.

A local source confirmed that more than ten people were killed and several others injured, noting that the attack was based on a mistaken belief about who was responsible. Search efforts for additional victims are still ongoing.

Kebbi State Deputy Governor, Senator Umar Abubakar Tafida, and officials of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) visited the community to console affected families.

The spokesperson for the Kebbi State Police Command, CSP Nafiu Abubakar, said he had not yet received an official report on the incident.

Between January and June 2025, the Lakurawa terrorist group has carried out multiple violent attacks in Sokoto and Kebbi States, killing 59 people and engaging security forces. Authorities say the group is part of a growing regional insurgency with possible links to Sahel-based militant networks.

Lakurawa militants are believed to have originated from Mali and have reportedly integrated into communities along the Nigeria–Niger border, building local ties through marriage and recruitment.
