At least 13 people have lost their lives in Malawi after several days of intense rainfall led to widespread flooding in different parts of the country.

Officials confirmed that the heavy downpour, which lasted from Sunday to Wednesday, caused significant damage, with some victims killed by collapsing structures while others drowned attempting to cross swollen rivers. In addition to the fatalities, dozens of people were reported injured.

Authorities revealed that 35 individuals sustained injuries, highlighting the scale of the disaster’s impact on communities, particularly in rural areas.
The district of Chikwawa was identified as the hardest hit, recording multiple deaths and the displacement of residents. Emergency shelters have been set up to accommodate those forced out of their homes due to the flooding.

Officials also warned of a heightened risk of further flooding, especially as neighboring Mozambique continues to experience similar weather conditions.
Weather authorities have indicated that more rainfall is expected in the coming days, raising concerns about additional damage and worsening humanitarian conditions in the country.

Malawi remains highly vulnerable to extreme weather events, with its agriculture-dependent economy frequently affected by climate-related disasters, including a recent drought and a past cyclone that caused widespread devastation.
