16 Killed, Several Injured as Passenger Bus Collides with Truck in Oyo

At least 16 people have lost their lives and several others sustained injuries after a passenger bus crashed into a stationary truck along the Oyo/Ogbomosho Expressway in Oyo town, Oyo State.

The tragic accident occurred on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, in front of Emmanuel Alayande University of Education.

Adebayo Akinwande, Special Adviser on Fire Reform and Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service Agency, confirmed that the bus, a Mazda 18-seater (registration GWL 687 XB, Kano), swerved and rammed into the rear of a stationary Howo truck (registration LSR 340 XW, Lagos).

“The impact caused a fire that quickly engulfed both vehicles, trapping passengers inside,” Akinwande said.

Firefighters arrived promptly, extinguished the blaze, and recovered 16 bodies from the scene. Three survivors were immediately transported to a nearby hospital by officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) for medical attention.

The Special Adviser attributed the accident to overspeeding and the reckless parking of heavy trucks along the expressway, warning that such practices continue to endanger motorists and passengers.

Recent road accidents across Nigeria have raised safety concerns. Earlier in November, a bus collided with a stationary truck near the OPIC area of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, causing both vehicles to ignite. Witnesses reported that the driver of the bus was trapped and burnt to death, leaving motorists stranded for hours.

In October, another multiple-vehicle collision involving a truck caused major traffic congestion on Otedola Bridge, following a deadly crash on Kara Bridge along the same route.

According to the FRSC, at least 5,421 people died in road accidents in Nigeria in 2024, a 7% increase from 5,081 fatalities recorded in 2023.
